In Vitro Diagnostic detection of antibiotic resistance mechanisms due to bacterial enzymes that hydrolyse beta-lactam antibiotics is an increasing concern in clinical microbiology. 

These enzymes, which are produced by enteric bacteria such as Klebsiella spp. and E.coli, are becoming increasingly significant clinically by limiting antibiotic therapeutic choice often in critically ill patients.  Identification of the mechanism of antibiotic resistance is also critical to ensure appropriate treatment.
